'To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.'
-- Henri Cartier-Bresson
About Me and My Work
Photography is a passion for me and I love the challenges of making a unique photograph. As a professional photographer, I have the expertise to capture all types of photographs; from portraiture to nature and wildlife, to the literal and the abstract, and from the mundane to the monumental. My name is Kathleen Johnston and I am lucky enough to live on the North Carolina coast where I can enjoy my passion for photography right in my own backyard. I never tire of photographing the ever-changing ocean and sand dunes, the beautiful marshes, the quaint seaside towns, and the abundant wildlife. And I especially love to photograph people - families, seniors, children & babies - on location in this wonderful environment. Another favorite pastime for me is traveling, both in the United States and abroad, capturing the world with my camera. I attend schools and workshops throughout the year to further my knowledge of photography and to bring me up to date on the newest equipment and techniques. I have attended photography classes at Coastal Carolina Community College and Carteret Community College and have taken several photography workshops throughout the United States where I was fortunate to have studied under such renowned photographers as Steve McCurry, Jay Maisel, Jill Enwright, Eddie Adams, & Bob Krist.
I have won numerous awards and my photographs have been exhibited at various venues both here in Eastern North Carolina as well as in Raleigh. My work has has been exhibited throughout Carteret County, at the Museum of Life and Science in Raleigh, the Craven Regional Airport in New Bern, and the North Carolina Aquarium. My photographs have been selected for yearlong exhibits at the Caswell Building in Raleigh and to hang at the NC Department of Insurance building in Raleigh. My prints also hang in homes and businesses around the country. My work has appeared in local newspapers and publications including cover shots for Island Review and Homes Magazine. Some of my other accomplishments include an Excellence in Photography Award from the Arts Council of Carteret County, 1st place in the Nature Workshop's annual photo contest , "Photo of the Week" at Birder's World Magazine, and my photograph of Aspen trees in Colorado was a finalist in Smithsonian Magazine's Annual Photo Competition; one of over 8,500 entries.
